Heterotopian Legacy

"Heterotopian Legacy" was exhibited in the "Thyla-Seen" group exhibition at Intoo Studios Perth. Philosopher Michel Foucault described a "heterotopia" as something which mirrors the outside, or creates a world within a world, but is at the same time out of context or a false reality of what it represents. Museum exhibits can be an example of the concept, particularly in the case of 'dead' specimens - at odds with a living, breathing creature in their natural habitat. Especially poignant for this taxidermy Thylacine - based on photographs of and visits to the Thylacine exhibit at WA Museum Boola Bardi - who was now been taken out of time as well as place. He (a male specimen from 1896) at least has the distinction of allowing us to witness something of how his species appeared, and to remember/reflect. 10% of net sales amount will be donated to Australian Wildlife Conservancy.

MATT WILLIAMS, a contemporary artist based in Perth, Western Australia, completed his Bachelor of Fine Art at Curtin University in 2020, after an initial background as a graphic designer (Certificate of Graphic Design and Commercial Art, Perth Technical College 1988). Themes that inform and inspire his art work include the human figure, literary/religious/historical concepts, the Thylacine/Tasmanian Tiger, science- fiction and cryptozoology. He also produces regular cartoons, comic strips and caricatures.

Matt is also a professional musician - performing and teaching vocals and guitar, has a keen interest in exercise, the ocean, and enjoys watching movies and catching up with friends.
