Artwork Description

As the male orca leads the pod through the icy environment, there is barely a ripple effecting the ocean that surrounds them. These creatures are able to evoke a sense of both serenity and urgency as they are a symbol of intelligence and strength. This artwork touches on the profound interconnection between marine life and the fragile ecosystem in which they thrive.

Artist Bio

Prudence Coburn is an Australian Contemporary Artist. She finds her inspiration in her surrounding landscape and environment.

"Growing up surrounded by a family of creatives, each in their own way. I was always encouraged to be creative and I really saw the history and depth that art has in the world.
When I graduated school I got accepted in to the Top Arts Exhibition in the NGV for my year 12 sculpture, this made me realised it was something I had a passion for and wanted to explore in my life."

Prudence later went to Art school at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne University where she was able to learn from other young artists and have group exhibitions. It is here that she studied Sculpture and Spatial Practice and learnt other skills such as welding and casting to continue developing her practice.

"I began to focus on the practice of sculpture and chose to follow this path and educate myself further. I went to Uni and studied Fine art sculpture which really challenged me but I'm so glad I did it because I learnt so many skills that I still regularly refer to. "

Prudence Graduated with a Bachelor a Fine arts (Visual Art) from University in 2018 and with her degree moved herself out of the city and to the Coast where she found she has sourced new inspirations from the different flora, fauna and lifestyle.

"As I have moved around my style has changed, I’ve noticed that I’m influenced by the places and experiences in my life. I have now found my love for painting again and still love experimenting with different materials and techniques like I would while studying sculpture. I find my inspiration from nature and have a strong coastal influence."

"I love sharing what I create with other people and I'm trying to build a career for myself from my art."
Prudence is always expanding her knowledge by taking art classes and immersing herself in the local community. She has undergone a Certificate in Small Business and a Certificate IV in Entrepreneurship and New business in 2023, while regularly exhibiting in various locations across Australia.
