Artwork Description

These body of works ‘Unstructured thoughts’ captures the spontaneity, imagination, fluidity, freedom, and emotional expression of children, where creativity flourishes without constraint.
The composition imbibes traditional motifs originated from the Igbo culture in western Nigeria called ‘Uli’ which were primarily used as body decoration, significant cultural events and communication. ‘Uli’ is inspired by nature, Igbo
cosmology, fertility, and strength. Uli declined during the 20th century post-colonisation and is represented in the series ‘unstructured thought’ as ‘Not forgotten, an ode to its existence.’ The body of work embraces unstructured art both
in practice and representation.

Medium: Impasto medium with palette knife application. Matisse acrylic paint and liquitex heavy medium used and finished with atelier satin gloss vanish.

Painting is stretched on canvas without a wire on the back.

Artist Bio

Queen Nwaneri is a Nigerian abstract contemporary artist, born in Rome, Italy, and currently based in Queensland, Australia. She holds a degree in Fine and Applied Art from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, which she obtained in 2012. Her foundational training in sculpting, textile design, and batik making was completed at the Nike Okundaye Art Centre in Oshogbo, Nigeria, in 2010.

Nwaneri is known for her unapologetic and expressive style, characterised by the use of bold, warm colours particularly blue, red, and yellow and rich textures. Her art resists strict realism, favoring abstraction that allows for emotional and conceptual depth. A portraitist and figurative painter, she draws inspiration from the moods and stories of women and children, Igbo cosmology, and pre-colonial Igbo symbols and motifs.

Her compositions often feature an open spatial approach, avoiding fixed or closed interpretations, which invites viewers into an ongoing dialogue with her work. Through this openness, she communicates broader themes of identity, heritage, and cultural memory. Nwaneri’s work blends tradition and modernity, using color and form to explore personal and collective narratives. Her unique approach places her at the forefront of contemporary African art, where her voice adds powerful perspective to global artistic discourses.
