Artwork Description

At this time I was exploring the relationship between children and play. This piece was based on a photo of my nephew reaching his hand out, and as I layered the patterns on I could imagine the strength and vulnerability he was showing in trying so many new skills while playing with his brothers. Children are the most courageous little scientists there are.

Artist Bio

Rachael is an abstract artist, secondary art teacher and gallery assistant currently based in Melbourne, Australia. She grew up in the Yarra Valley surrounded by the Manna Gums and fresh river water, and consequently draws inspiration from these singular moments of dappled light, as well as the poetry of the mundane and domestic. After living and exhibiting by the ocean in Geelong and travelling abroad to further her language studies in Slovenia, she is currently teaching in Rowville where she is passionate about developing a creative practice that symbiotically feeds into other modes of creativity while enriching the community around her.
Rachael has participated in a number of exhibitions over the years and has been commended on her fresh approach to abstraction. As a mixed media artist, her works involve months of experimentation and draw on a strong compositional understanding through her formal painting studies. When she is not teaching or in the studio, she also enjoys craft evenings with friends, hiking in the Australian bush, and cooking something new.
