Artwork Description

"Desert Sun" is a vibrant exploration of nature's resilience and beauty, captured through bold, textured strokes and an explosion of colour. The artwork features sunflowers in full bloom, their petals radiating energy and life. The use of mixed media brings a tactile depth to the canvas, with layered paints creating a sense of movement and growth. Rich tones of yellow, green, and hints of crimson contrast with sky blues and earthy browns, symbolising the harmony and conflict found within nature.

R. Hains-Wesson’s signature style—characterised by expressive colour palettes and intricate detailing—shines through in this piece, inviting viewers to reflect on the power and fragility of flora. The textured layering technique adds a three-dimensional effect, allowing light to interact dynamically with the surface, making the sunflowers seem almost alive.

This artwork is perfect for collectors who appreciate bold, contemporary interpretations of nature, as well as those seeking a statement piece that commands attention and inspires reflection.

Artist inspiration: "Desert Sun" is a celebration of nature's resilience and beauty, inspired by the sunflower's unyielding ability to turn towards the light, even in the harshest conditions. Drawing from my personal reflections on growth and perseverance, I wanted to convey not just the visual beauty of sunflowers, but also their symbolic representation of optimism and strength. The choice of bold colours and textured layers serves as a visual metaphor for the richness and depth of nature. The sunflowers burst forth from the canvas, their vibrant petals painted with expressive strokes that evoke movement and vitality. This was an intentional choice to mirror the unpredictability and organic beauty of natural landscapes—an acknowledgment of nature's capacity to thrive amid uncertainty. The abstract background is a mosaic of organic shapes and geometric fragments, symbolising the ever-changing environments that sunflowers endure and flourish within. Through the use of mixed media, I sought to create a tactile experience, inviting viewers to not only observe but also feel the energy and life that these blooms represent. This piece is an invitation to reflect on resilience, to find beauty in change, and to embrace the light, no matter the circumstance.

Artist Bio

My journey into the art world began in the late 1990s as an actress, and by the early 2000s, I founded a theatre company in Melbourne, Victoria. My creative pursuits have always centred on portraying strong women and youth in literature, theatre, and film. I am a trained performance artist and writer, and a self-taught fine artist who enjoys creating from home, often with my lively family offering their unfiltered feedback on my work. I thrive on having multiple projects underway at once, engaging in research, writing essays, opinion pieces, poetry, short stories, novels, plays, and advancing my academic career in higher education. My driving force is a desire to make the world a better place.

I've been honoured to receive awards from the Queen’s Trust Foundation and the Myer Foundation for my acclaimed theatre-in-education works, particularly those focused on anti-bullying programs for primary and secondary schools across Australia. In the early 2000s, I pioneered theatre-in-education programs that supported students in tackling bullying in Australian primary schools, a contribution I hold dear. My portfolio spans over 100 publications, including journal articles, book chapters, plays, and books, featured in esteemed national and international outlets.

As a mixed media artist, I work with oil pastels, charcoal, pencil, acrylics, and water colours to express political and cultural themes from the past and present, aiming to provoke thought and reflection in today's context. My art ranges from realism to abstract, including portraits, and I relish the freedom and expression that painting affords me. Every brushstroke is an opportunity to embed hidden secrets for viewers to uncover, inviting them to interpret and engage with my work.

I hope my artwork inspires you to rethink big ideas and discover the layers of hidden messages within each piece. Most of my works are on canvas, ready to hang and safely ship, making them accessible for collectors everywhere.
