Artwork Description

Sleep Synesthesia — Synesthetes Series
Acrylic on canvas, 51 × 51 cm

Sleep Synesthesia explores the quiet threshold between consciousness and dreaming — a space where sensation dissolves its boundaries and perception becomes fluid. Within the Synesthetes Series, this work reflects the experience of feeling colour as emotion, movement as sound, and rest as a shifting landscape of sensory overlap.

Deep midnight blues anchor the composition, evoking the mental stillness that arrives just before sleep. This expansive darkness functions as the subconscious itself — calm, immersive, and infinite. Across this field, streams of cool whites, icy blues, and translucent aquas drift and fold organically, mirroring the slow unwinding of thought as the mind transitions into rest.

Curving flows of paint resemble neural pathways or dream currents, suggesting senses merging rather than remaining separate. Subtle infusions of red, rose, and warm tonal accents surface within the cooler palette like emotional pulses — fleeting memories or sensations that continue to move beneath sleep’s quiet surface. The fluid pouring process allows gravity and intuition to guide the composition, reflecting the artist’s emotional state of release, introspection, and trust in unconscious movement.

Mentally and emotionally, the piece emerges from a space of surrender — an attempt to visualise how a synesthete may experience sleep itself: colours felt as atmosphere, movement heard as rhythm, and emotion perceived as light and flow. Boundaries soften, forms dissolve, and the painting becomes less an image and more an experience.

Within a collector’s home, Sleep Synesthesia acts as both a focal point and a grounding presence. Its balance of deep tonal calm and gentle movement allows it to integrate effortlessly into contemporary, coastal, minimalist, or modern interiors. The rich blues introduce depth and sophistication, while the flowing lighter forms bring softness and tranquillity to a space. Positioned in a living area, bedroom, or quiet reading corner, the work encourages pause — subtly shifting the energy of the room toward calm reflection.

Rather than overpowering décor, the painting interacts with its environment, echoing natural light throughout the day and revealing new tonal relationships as surroundings change. It creates an atmosphere of serenity while adding visual intrigue, inviting viewers and collectors alike to return to it repeatedly, discovering new emotional resonances over time.

As part of the Synesthetes Series, Sleep Synesthesia becomes more than a singular artwork within a home; it functions as an experiential anchor — a piece that bridges art, emotion, and environment, transforming interior space into one that feels contemplative, immersive, and quietly alive.
