Artwork Description

'Carved in the sand' is a relief texture acrylic painting abstractedly portraying our luxurious sandstone shores in a deconstructed style. From the Sediments of Time series which expands the theme of my recent collections exploring Australia’s unique ecosystem, diverse topography, and colour. This series depicts the rich sandstone which adorns Australia's coastline, its undulating permutations, variation in colour and grain and the strata layers of natural sediment, nooks crannies and hidden gems deposited and buried long ago.

The spiral is a subtle symbol for evolution evoking an important conservation message and the need for us to nurture our planet for future generations to enjoy.

Approximately 15 layers of acrylic medium and paint are used to build the relief texture, colour overlay and detail. Accents of glass beads provide a hint of shimmer. The subtle cracks are deliberately added using a specially created acrylic medium to add texture, depth and to enrich the characteristics of the theme. Shapes and contours are carved into the medium, using mostly non-traditional objects. All the acrylic paint and textured acrylic medium used in this painting is professional artist quality which means the colours have very good light fast properties.

Canvas is stretched and ready to hang in either landscape or portrait; flip it up or down, anyway you prefer. Sides are clean, finished cream, so it can be hung without a frame or add a frame of your choice. Signed on the side and authored on the back. Comes with a certificate of authenticity.

If you'd like this artwork framed or in a different size or a different colour please contact me. Suits a natural oak frame as illustrated. Pairs well with 'Ocean's Edge'.

Artist Bio

Colourful textured art for homes collectors and offices.

Rachel’s deep affinity with the natural world, and an appreciation for its beauty and diversity, informs powerful expressive abstracts, telling simple stories of complex issues.

Rachel Hayhurst is an English-Australian, Sydney based, abstract artist, working predominantly in acrylic with an array of medium to build relief texture paintings. She is inspired by the sights and sounds of our unique world, translating experiences, memories and emotions, into conceptual rich complex layers. Many of the marks, shapes and contours in Rachel’s work represent those seen only from the air, a by-product of many hours travelling coast to coast.

Her work is influenced by a diverse range of artists across many genres, most noteworthy impressionism (Monet) and abstract expressionism (Pollock), and lasting memories from gallery visits around the globe. Rachel’s current work explores Australia’s unique ecosystem, rich colours and topography. The spiral, which can be seen in all of her current work, symbolises evolution and our relationship with and impact on the environment in hope that we as a society can appreciate, protect and nurture what we have before it’s too late.

Commercially trained in Atlanta Georgia, Rachel’s work continues to evolve, through exploration of new medium, tools and applicators, traditional and random everyday objects. Combining training with freedom of expression, and a modern twist, her work has developed from detailed technical works to complex but freer compositions, whilst pushing boundaries to translate important messages through a deliberate blend of traditional and contemporary practice. Feeling her way across the canvas, the journey is as important for Rachel as the final destination.

Her work features in homes and private collections in England, America, Europe and Australia.

When she’s not in the studio you’ll find Rachel behind the camera photographing football (soccer) supporting her family and capturing memories for others.

This is our world ... her view.
