Artwork Description

In the making of this work, I have sewn stitches of tapestry wool on to linen and then cut down the centre of each strip to form the soft, carpet rows.
In using wool, a material relating to the traditionally 'feminine' crafts, in a contemporary art context, the work references femininity (and feminism) in the historically male dominated realm of Modernist painting and Abstract Expressionism.
The small scale of this work, compared to the large, imposing paintings of Modernism, creates a contrasting and more intimate relationship between the viewer and the artwork.
The tapestry wool used in the work is treated to be resistant to any damage by moths and other insects.
With the use of bright colours, soft textures and interesting technique this work would be a lovely and enlivening addition to any room or gallery.

Artist Bio

Thanks for taking an interest in my artwork and art practice, spanning over 30 years now!

I explore the qualities of the materials I use and emphasise those qualities in my work, which is usually wall based and relates to painting. I often experiment with alternative materials like wool, satin and Perspex. A love of strong colour and rich textures informs my work.
My work is always abstract and relates to Abstract Expressionism and Geometric Abstraction.
There is a feminist component in my work: instead of the hard edges and large scale aspects of Modernist paintings I make small scale, intimate works, using materials associated with traditional 'feminine' arts and crafts, subverting the imposing and 'masculine' elements of the male-dominated tradition of Modernism.
Having completed an Arts Degree at Griffith University I then commenced a Visual Arts Degree at Sydney College of the Arts in 1997 and specialized in painting. Since completing my degrees, I have exhibited extensively in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
Several of my artworks have been purchased by Artbank, Deutscher Menzies and private collectors.
