The isolated wilderness of Antarctica is a sanctuary for wildlife that is use to life in the extreme, like this Weddell seal, marooned on an iceberg off the Antarctic peninsular. Spending most of their time below the ice, Weddell seals can hold their breath for up to 45 min as they hunt fish that have been backlit by the ice. This Weddell seal was spotted while hauled out on the ice for a rest between hunts as the largest female expedition to Antarctica sailed past as part of the Homeward Bound women in science leadership initiative.
