Artwork Description

FINDING MY WINGS.
Three monarch butterflies emerge from a pressed botanical 'landscape' in soft shades of coral, rose, saffron, and plum, their vivid orange wings contrasting with the delicate botanical impressions surrounding them. Set against the organic beauty of handmade paper, these butterflies evoke the moment when something once hidden begins to take flight.

Painted directly on natural hand-pressed paper (made using a traditional paper-making process in which natural leaves are pressed directly into the paper pulp), these butterflies represent transformation, metamorphosis, and the possibility of becoming something new.

This artwork was painted while training intensively in an ancient Indian sword fighting martial art called Kalaripayattu, and the themes of metamorphosis are very real and present in my life through the training process! Painting beautiful, delicate butterflies on colourful, handmade paper adds a softness to my life here that I truly appreciate and luxuriate in.

Artist Bio

I’m Rae, an Australian artist currently based in India and training 5 hours per day in an ancient sword-fighting martial art called Kalaripayattu.
My art reflects the metamorphosis I am experiencing in real-time here, a constant cycle of dissolving, rebuilding myself and unfurling new wings to find new freedom within my being.
This collection of Metamorphosis artworks represent vitality, inner alchemy and the power of new beginnings.

Life and training here in India is intense and very disciplined, so my art is intentionally soft and evocative, creating a tranquility that balances the fire.
I weave India’s bold colours and natural textures into each piece, creating work that brings vibrancy and life into your home.

I hope you love these pieces! Please feel free to contact me for a commission if you have a colour palette/specific butterfly that you'd like created uniquely for you.
