Age of Scopa is a reimagining of the deck of cards used to play the popular Italian card game Scopa. Explore the curious ambiguity of portraiture and still life - weaving a narrative between the four kingdoms known as Cups, Coins, Clubs & Swords.
The body of work this was part of allowed me to explore painting on smaller surfaces without structure. Instead of an underdrawing or reference lines, a reactive form of painting was used. Brush strokes and colour, once applied, would inform what would follow and as the project continued an unspoken narrative started to emerge. As well as an opportunity to explore a range of colour theory.
This was one of the original paintings that was scanned and printed as a playable deck. That playable deck is available through my website.
*Note: The image of the back was an empty frame to show both the wire, the way the backing was handled and the two soft pads which make it sit nicely on the wall. Each painting actually comes with a signature bottom right and a title top left.
