Artwork Description

Figure painting of a woman in an Art Nouveau style where the figure is embedded in a semi-abstract patterned design with the aim of creating a beautiful evocative overall effect.

Artist Bio

I live in Adelaide and my aim is to use pastels and paints to create artistically beautiful, compelling and mysterious interpretations of the human form which will appeal to the viewer.

Listening to music as I draw is an important and inspiring part of the process. The rhythms of the music help to guide the drawing process and enhance creativity.

I have been drawing and painting for many years covering various subjects and styles using oil paint and pastels. I studied at the Stanley Street Art School in Adelaide in the 1980s.

In recent years I have focused on the human figure in pastel on paper. Many of my pastel works are from live models using an impressionistic style and others are more studied expressionistic works where I combine the human figure with abstract designs.

Life drawing is an exhilarating process and I hope some of the joy and excitement involved in the creation of these works is felt by the viewer. There is something special about a drawing from a living model which has fascinated lovers of art throughout the centuries and continues to do so to this day.
I often work on the life drawings after the pose is finished in order to enrich the colour and form of the picture.

In my expressionist figure paintings using pastels, I aim to blend aspects of abstract art with the human figure in interesting ways to create works in which the observer can delight in the interplay between the descriptive and the abstract and to be attracted by unexpected, exciting and expressive composition.

Pastel works on paper will last for centuries if properly cared for as we can see from the many existing works of great artists from the past.
