Black Tusk is such an iconic view from the top of Whistler Peak in Canada. It’s beautiful and majestic any time of year, shrouded in cloud, snow covered or sun drenched.
This painting is composed of so many layers, and unfortunately the size makes it hard for you to see the texture and details online. I’ve included lots of close up photos to give you a sense of the intricacies, the jagged rock, the wispy clouds, the mountain ridges peeking through. The layers seemed very fitting, as the Black Tusk is considered to be the remnant of an extinct andesitic strato volcano that formed 1.3 – 1.1 million years ago. Following glacial dissection, renewed volcanism produced the lava dome and the flow formed its summit about 170,000 years ago.
The black paint I used has cool undertones. This colour gives the painting the faintest of faint hints of a blue grey and the promise of fresh snow in the air.
