Trample

“Trample” was inspired by a vision I received while praying, where I saw Jesus descending through the clouds, coming down upon Satan and fallen angels. As I began painting, the word “trample” repeatedly came to mind and I knew this was in reference to a specific verse. Although not part of the original vision, I felt led to include two bolts of lightning near the base of the painting.

I later read the verse in the Gospel of Luke, where Jesus speaks of giving us authority to trample on serpents and scorpions. In the same bit of text Jesus also declares that He saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I didn’t know these 2 verses were connected and then it made complete sense why I felt led to add the lightning after reading this. The imagery of this part of Scripture mirrored the vision for this piece in a lovely way.

The work also incorporates two Egyptian gods depicted as fallen angels. During the creation of this piece, my husband and I were attending services within the Coptic Orthodox Church, deepening our exploration of the Christian faith. Two angels placed in the upper corners create a visual contrast between benevolent and fallen beings, emphasising the tension between divine authority and rebellion.

I create surrealist framed oil paintings exploring portraits, insects, Christian symbolism, and objects that represent light, faith, and spiritual meaning.

God has healed me both physically and mentally, and He has also gifted me with the ability to create. Because of this, I feel called to remain in relationship with my Creator and to create alongside Him. Through my work, I hope to share the message that joy, peace, and hope can be found within each of us through our relationship with God.

My sketches begin through prayer and gradually evolve as I paint, allowing space for what I feel God is speaking to me throughout the process. During a painting, I often experience a recurring word or phrase circulating through my mind. This becomes the starting point for the meaning of the work, leading me into a deeper period of meditation and contemplation on its subject matter. My practice often becomes a kind of push and pull. There are moments when I feel strongly compelled to include something that I initially resist or put off, only to eventually understand that the painting is not entirely mine and that I do not have to carry every creative decision myself. At times, I do not fully understand what a painting is about until I am nearing its completion. As I meditate on the word, imagery, and subject matter that have emerged throughout the process, the meaning gradually reveals itself to me.

Throughout this practice, my goal is to create artwork that evokes a sense of peace and safety, reflecting the love of our Creator and inviting the viewer into a moment of quiet contemplation.
