Artwork Description

Date: 21 March 2017

A celebration of every curve! This larger than life lady was the party starter. Inspired by a sculpture that I stumbled upon by a magnificently talented German artist, Thi'ck Woman #1 is the introduction to my visual dissertation exploring and challenging the concept of beauty.

With a hard acrylic background, this bountiful beauty was created using softer more malleable water colour pencil paints. My style is to use brush manipulation to 'gently force' pigment across the canvas, creating tonal differences and textured highlights.

Th'ick Woman # 1 is framed in an understated natural timber frame with its own individual character. This frame has been handmade and the canvas custom set and wired to fit the specific canvas. Using a combination of new and up-cycled materials, all new materials were purchased from small business operators.

Artist Bio

Rebecca Rosengrave is a mother, dedicated meditator, passionate artist and story-teller whose painting seeks to challenge societal norms around beauty and nudity. Her artistic journey is deeply personal—rooted in both creative exploration and lived experience.

Rebecca is best known for her bold and unapologetic nude paintings, which celebrate the diversity of the human form. With a particular interest in dismantling the absurdity of shame surrounding nakedness, her art invites viewers to reconsider what it means to be beautiful. "Thick or thin, short or tall, we are all magnificent," she affirms—a belief that took on deeper meaning after she sustained physical injuries during the birth of her first daughter. What began as artistic curiosity evolved into a profound mission to reclaim and redefine bodily autonomy and beauty.

Her unique style blends confident colour with intentional abstraction. She uses the fluidity and texture of watercolours to represent Universal energy, often leaving heads, hands, and feet unfinished—symbolising her belief that we are all expressions of one shared consciousness. In contrast, Rebecca applies acrylics and other more rigid materials to her backgrounds, representing the tangible world and the illusion of external control over our lives.

Though it took years to build the courage to publicly share her art, Rebecca now embraces vulnerability through her work. Her paintings are not only raw and emotionally resonant—they’re a reflection of the energy that flows within her.
