Artwork Description

I Am the Storm is a series of intuitive, mixed media works exploring resilience, inner strength, and the experience of moving through hardship. Created over time through layering, reworking, and instinctive mark-making, each piece reflects a process of persistence and emotional endurance.
Working with acrylics, ink, and textured elements, the series is anchored by a predominantly blue palette that loosely references seascapes and shifting waters. Movement emerges through blending and layered surfaces, while areas of built texture create moments of contrast and drama. Accents of pink and gold appear throughout the works, offering warmth and calm.
Open to interpretation, I Am the Storm invites viewers to connect with their own experiences of resilience, change, and the quiet strength that exists beneath the surface.

Artist Bio

Bec Thorne is a Cairns-based artist working primarily with acrylic and mixed media. Her practice is intuitive and emotionally driven, guided by a deep sensitivity to colour, texture, and the physical act of making. Colour is a central force in her work, shaping mood and energy, while layered surfaces and tactile elements create depth, movement, and presence.
Each painting unfolds gradually over time through a process of layering, mark-making, and experimentation with a range of techniques. Rather than following a predetermined plan, Bec allows instinct and emotion to guide the evolution of each piece, responding to the surface as it develops. Texture plays a vital role in this process, inviting close engagement and encouraging viewers to experience the work on a sensory level.
Alongside her painting practice, Bec is also a photographer and has studied photography. Her passion for travel and floral photography continues to influence her visual language, informing her sensitivity to colour, composition, and detail across both mediums.
Bec has been creating art for many years, with a more focused and consistent practice emerging in recent years. Largely self-directed and shaped through ongoing exploration and informal study, her work reflects an evolving relationship with emotion, material, and the quiet, intuitive moments that guide the creative process.
