Re:versus

A previous mentor once likened the art world to boxing; using it as a metaphor for many of its machinations. Over the last twenty years it’s been a recurring theme in my work.
This work, originally titled Verses on Versus and exhibited during my residency at fortyfivedownstairs in 2017, was reworked during 2021’s earlier lockdown.

Rehgan De Mather has established himself as an artist to watch. Since completing his BVA at Monash University, he’s had 27 solo and 30 group exhibitions; is represented in numerous public and private collections in Australia, Singapore, UK, USA and Ireland; has been the finalist in many high-profile awards including the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and The Lester Prize; was selected as the 2013 RAW Melbourne Visual Artist of the Year; and has been awarded multiple artist residencies.
