I created this watercolour artwork for the 2018 Pro Hart Outback Art Awards. I wanted to paint a spider that lives in the area around Broken Hill and during my research I read about the flooding of Menindee Lake in 2016. Up until that year, the lake had been extremely dry, but the heavy rains in 2016 washed all the spiders (mainly wolf spiders) out of their homes, causing them to seek shelter elsewhere. I titled this "Menindee Wolf" for obvious reasons. Wolf spiders are harmless to humans but I know that many people are still afraid of them so I played on that a bit and painted this one on a full watercolour sheet.
I am very grateful to my FB friend Mark Newton for letting me use his wolf spider photo for a reference.
The measurements, including the frame, are 89 cm x 107 cm x 2 cm. The glass is museum non-reflective glass which means you feel even closer to the painting, the painting has been floated on a double mount, and the outside frame is a stunning wood grain with gold strip.
