Artwork Description

Becoming - Oil on canvas with mixed media underpainting | 76 x 102 cm (unframed)

At the heart of Becoming stands a lion โ€” strong, steady, and quietly assured. Its calm gaze and grounded presence reflect an inner journey just as powerful as the outer one. This piece was inspired by the slow, quiet transformations we each go through โ€” the layered moments of struggle, resilience, and clarity that shape who we are becoming.

Around the lion are textured, symbolic details that softly speak of growth:
A boat on rough seas โ€” the challenges life brings
Clocks โ€” the passing of time
Tracks โ€” lessons learned
A dove โ€” the search for inner peace
The lion โ€” a symbol of strength, truth, and becoming our truest selves

This artwork invites reflection. It brings a quiet but empowering energy to any space โ€” a reminder to trust our path, even when it unfolds slowly. Ideal for collectors who seek meaningful, emotionally resonant art.

Materials:
Although created using a mixed-media process, Becoming is primarily an oil painting on professional-grade stretched canvas. Layers of acrylic and spray paint form the expressive underpainting, adding movement and energy beneath the final oil layers. The painting is sealed with a protective satin varnish and ready for display.

Artist Bio

** New to bluethumb art**

Rita Hsu is a Melbourne-based artist known for her evocative oil paintings that quietly celebrate the emotional bond between humans, animals, and the natural world. Born and raised in Taiwan, she grew up surrounded by rich cultural traditions that continue to shape her artistic sensibility. Her journey began with a spontaneous drawing of a sunflower โ€” a small moment that sparked a lifelong love for creating art that speaks without words.

Since moving to Melbourne in 2010, Rita has immersed herself in the cityโ€™s creative energy, gradually refining a visual language that blends realism with expressive, impressionistic brushwork. Her subjects โ€” often animals โ€” are captured not just in form, but in feeling. With each stroke, she seeks to reveal their inner spirit, quiet strength, and emotional depth.

Rita primarily works in oils, drawn to their richness, texture, and ability to convey subtle emotion. Recently, she has also been exploring mixed media techniques to add layers of complexity and atmosphere to her work. A passionate learner, she continues to expand her practice by experimenting with new tools, materials, and approaches โ€” always staying curious.

Every painting is personal. It may begin with a fleeting moment in nature, a soulful gaze, or a mood that lingers in her heart โ€” but always, it is a reflection of something meaningful. Her work resonates deeply with collectors, many of whom describe feeling a sense of warmth, calm, or connection through her pieces.

Ritaโ€™s recent solo exhibition marked a significant chapter in her journey, offering not just artworks but intimate glimpses into the stories behind them. She continues to paint with care and intention, hoping her art brings beauty, connection, and emotion into the everyday lives of those who welcome it into their homes.
