Artwork Description

This image was taken in the hallway of a middle school in Pripyat, Ukraine in 2010, during one of my trips to conduct field work in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

It is a simple still life of two chairs, one stacked upon the other, in a hallway. Two chairs which have not been touched since the world's first major peacetime nuclear disaster in 1986.

Time passes.

The walls decay and fall apart.

It is cold. It is damp, and completely isolated. However, it is not unhappy. It is a study in entropy. It's a stoic image that speaks of inaction, of cessation and the cold, silent, stillness that comes when action ceases.
