I paint landscapes in oils, using expressive color and application to translate lived experience into paint. My goal is not just to record a place but to convey its beauty, mood and emotional presence. I build surfaces through layers that balance observation with abstraction. The resulting paintings blend recognisable features with more expressive elements, so that viewers connect with the landscape as both a real place and an emotional experience.
I am drawn to oil paint for its rich colour, texture and versatility. It allows me to respond to the landscape in a physical and intuitive way. I use a palette knife with careful slow passes or bold ambitious swipes; or use my fingers, sometimes a brush. Color, gesture and layered paint become tools for expressing atmosphere and memory. With shifts in the ambient light, my paintings transform, reflecting the way our experience and perception of a landscape can also change
Through oil painting, I aim to create works that invite contemplation, where the energy of the painted surface reflects the vitality and complexity of the natural world.
Best wishes, Rob.
