Layers of transparent pigments have been applied, giving a sense of light and atmosphere. The deepening tones are reminiscent of the half light of a late afternoon when, after your eyes adjust, you see a lot of subtle, subdued details.
This work was inspired by the C.J.Dennis poem, "Hist Hark" where children are on their way home after a long day of play. They are late, it is getting dark and they're looking forward to their dinner.
"Hist hark, the night is very dark, and we've to go a mile or so, across the Possum Park. Step light,....."
