This work is about spaces and sounds.
It’s a human thing. I am investigating spaces and how they are occupied – even whether they are occupied.
The shape of sounds, the visual communication of noises constantly intrigues me. The hollowness of an empty space, for example, has sound - the sound of quiet. How can I visualise this?
“Night Noises” is about the sounds of insects flitting and scratching against the windows and getting caught in the blinds and lights on a summer's night while I am working in my studio. This large drawing was created over several weeks while I reminisced on those times. I had moved to a cold climate from a tropical one and realised the things that I missed and had taken for granted.
I hone away unnecessary detail and search for the essential message or feeling through use of form, colour, tone, texture, contrast, memory and experience.
My work has always been influenced by everyday activities and experiences, places and patterns.
“Night Noises” was shortlisted in the 33rd Alice Prize, Alice Springs, in 2004.
