Our chaotic times lead me back to more introspective work where I am listening to thoughts in my head and to the stories of others. I need to go back to a beginning that is uncluttered and calm, and evocative of gentleness and patience. This work was mediative in its creation yet privately emotionally loaded.
My paintings have their roots in the real world, but are by no means images in the conventional sense. I do not copy my subjects but interpret them through how I feel at the time of painting.
Recently I have turned to my immediate environment for subject matter where the mountain and bush behind me have become my muse. I note the changes in light and colours and the different sounds and smells during the different times of the days and seasons. Dry, crackle, hum, hush. The bush pings, the air stings, the kookaburras laugh. At night, the air is cool and fragrant, the dampness sits heavily in my nostrils, the mist engulfs all.
Drawing, memory, imagination, and using colours and materials that I feel like using at the time, keep me absorbed in the whole process, as if in a state of meditation.
“I work from memory of 10 minutes ago and 50 years ago”. (David Hockney)
