Rod Moore is an Australian painter working in a distinctive style of atmospheric Australian Impressionism. From his studio in the Noosa Hinterland, he creates evocative oil paintings inspired by the Australian bush, rural life, quiet coastlines and those fleeting moments when changing light transforms an ordinary place into something memorable.

At the heart of Rod’s work is the convergence of two significant artistic influences: the atmospheric landscape tradition of the late John Wilson and the warmth, humanity and narrative quality of internationally recognised Australian artist Robert Hagan.

Rod spent approximately several years studying under John Wilson, one of Australia’s most respected traditional landscape painters. From Wilson, he developed a deeper understanding of tonal relationships, composition, aerial perspective and the subtle progression of colour through the landscape.

Wilson’s ability to create vast distances, luminous skies and an authentic sense of the Australian bush left a lasting impression on Rod. This influence can be seen in Rod’s use of warm, sunlit foregrounds, cooler distant ranges and carefully controlled values that give his paintings depth and atmosphere.

More importantly, Wilson reinforced the principle that a landscape painting should communicate the character and feeling of a place rather than merely record its physical appearance.

A second pivotal influence came through Rod’s mentorship and friendship with Robert Hagan. During an intensive period working alongside Hagan in his Thailand studio, Rod explored a more emotionally expressive and narrative approach to painting.

Hagan’s emphasis on storytelling, movement, human connection and the poetry of everyday life encouraged Rod to look beyond the landscape itself and consider what a painting might cause the viewer to feel.

Where Wilson provided the tonal discipline and expansive atmosphere of the Australian landscape tradition, Hagan opened the door to warmth, narrative and human emotion.

Rod’s atmospheric Australian Impressionism has emerged from the convergence of these two influences.

His paintings bring together Wilson’s command of distance, values and Australian light with Hagan’s instinct for storytelling and emotional connection. Upon this foundation, Rod has developed an increasingly recognisable visual language of his own ... broad painterly marks, palette-knife texture, passages of golden light, cool blue shadows and figures quietly integrated into the landscape.

Rather than dominating the scene, the people in Rod’s paintings often appear as solitary travellers, workers, observers or companions. Their presence suggests a story while allowing the landscape to retain its scale, mystery and emotional authority.

Rod is particularly drawn to moments of transition: morning light emerging across an open plain, the final warmth of afternoon touching a distant range, passing rain over rural country, or a lone figure pausing beside the sea.

These are quiet moments, but they speak to enduring themes of resilience, reflection, belonging, optimism and hope.

Although firmly connected to the traditions of Australian landscape painting, Rod does not seek to reproduce the past. His aim is to carry its values forward through a contemporary and increasingly personal form of impressionism, honouring observation, craftsmanship and respect for the landscape while embracing expressive mark-making, textural surfaces and emotional interpretation.

His Australian subjects are complemented by paintings inspired by his travels through Europe, particularly Italy and France. Whether depicting a rural Australian waterhole, a sunlit European street or a quiet figure outside a café, Rod remains focused on the same essential elements: light, atmosphere, human connection and the emotional resonance of place.

Rod is the founder of Moore Art Gallery in the Noosa Hinterland and the Learn To Paint Academy, through which he has introduced thousands of aspiring artists around the world to the fundamentals of painting.

His experience as an educator has strengthened his understanding of composition, values, colour and visual communication. However, his own studio practice remains a continuing journey of discovery ... one guided by tradition but committed to finding an individual and contemporary artistic voice.

Rod’s original paintings are held in private collections throughout Australia and internationally. Each work is created as an invitation to pause, enter the landscape and reconnect with something enduring: a memory of place, the warmth of familiar light, the presence of another person, or the quiet recognition that beauty can still be found in the world around us.
