Artwork Description

This image is from a series reflecting my long interest with architecture or FROZEN MUSIC, to use Goethe’s phrase. In inhabiting the natural world, we human beings have always created defined boundaries around ourselves. As soon as we emerged from caves we began to construct shelters, then walls and fences, hedges and moats around our own spaces.

In seeking to express the architectural equivalence of harmony to dissonance, rubato to staccato, fortissimo to pianissimo, this series of black and white images explore the form, texture and graphics of surfaces and edges, searching to create a resonant beauty, echoing a deep primeval yearning for the comfort of boundaries.

Artist Bio

I pursued painting, drawing and music performance in my youth. However, these passions were largely put aside for a career in engineering. I have always been drawn to the world of visual communication. As a young engineer I spent many years at the drawing board. Sketching and drawing the 3D built world is part of my DNA and working as an engineer in a creative architectural and interior design office for 25 years gave me a love of architectural visual arts. I have been taking photographs for more than 40 years, mainly during travels and of friends and family. After retiring I realised that photography could fill an artistic gap in my life, allowing me to again become involved in visual expression and communication. I enthusiastically pursue various photographic genres.

Whilst I have had several exhibitions, my photographic euphoria occurs at the moment of seeing and capturing the image. And my continuing journey is inspired by the following quote by Katsushika Hokusai.

“From the age of six I had a mania for drawing the shapes of things. When I was 50 I had published a universe of designs. But all I have done before the age of 70 is not worth bothering with. At 75 I'll have learned something of the pattern of nature, of animals, of plants, of trees, birds, fish and insects. When I am 80 you will see real progress. At 90 I shall have cut my way deeply into the mystery of life itself. At 100, I shall be a marvellous artist. At 110, everything I create, a dot, a line, will jump to life as never before. To all of you who are going to live as long as I do, I promise to keep my word. I am writing this in my old age. I used to call myself Hokusai, but today I sign my self 'The Old Man Mad About Drawing.”
