Hello there,
This is Rosie and I am a Painter.
I was born in Rotorua, New Zealand and immigrated to Sydney, with my large, musical family and Australian born father in 1977.
Music was always a big feature in our family with my father being a Jazz Musician in his early years in Australia and siblings playing various instruments and/or singing.
I too loved music, particularly Bass Guitar and practiced regularly. However I always had a love of drawing which I did from a young age.
It was hard competing with the talents of my brothers who were both exceptional bass player and drummer and suggestions were made that I be the 'artist' of the family.....
Whilst working in all areas of hospitality as a teenager (amongst many other endeavours) I came across an exhibition in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney which blew my mind.....
and immediately went home and painted one of my first oil paintings which was a copy of 'The Dance Class' by Edgar Degas.... that was it!! I was hooked .... loved the feel of it, the excitement of working with oils... the texture, smell and how quickly I could bring this small image together....
I enrolled in East Sydney Technical College that year (now named the National Art School, Sydney) at the age of 20 and spent the next few years working the brushes plus many many hours of drawing classes.
Being initially drawn to the impressionists and expressionists, I found that I naturally had a tendency to work very quickly and intensely with broader strokes and that the paintings that always seem to
'work' for me were the ones done this way.
It is my goal to let the paint and markings work to create space and light around the image or subject so that an energy, feeling and uniqueness can be sensed by the work.
I hope you enjoy viewing my work and I would be happy to discuss commission work if possible.
Warm regards,
Rosie Dorsett
