Artwork Description

All my prior paintings had been created on canvas. I wanted to experiment with timber to create more a more robust surface which could be scrapped to achieve patterns difficult to achieve on canvass.

Scrapping techniques where enabled by the smooth surface provided by multiple layers of sanded gesso on 5 ply timber. The ply is framed around the edge on the reverse side by dressed pine (3x1cm) adhered by "Weld Bond' and clamping. The edge width achieved is 1.8 cm.

Artist Bio

A nature lover since childhood Roslyn studied biology and worked as an environmental scientist for 20 years in Gladstone. Retiring to Brisbane in 2012 provided the opportunity to indulge in painting. Jane James taught Marine Art (acrylics) at the Brisbane Institute of Art (BIA), in a realistic style and she was a huge inspiration. Roslyn has since undertaken many courses at the BIA including watercolours and abstraction using acrylics. She had previously enjoying playing with various crafts including lead lighting, copper foiling, mosaics and lamp worked beads. The toughest and very rewarding challenge was battling abstract painting with the very patient Nameer Davies (B(A). She had previously enjoying playing with various crafts including lead lighting, copper foiling, mosaics and lamp worked beads.

As a young teenager viewing Blue Poles at the Sydney Opera House was an epiphany. The public furor generated by the purchase of Blue Poles by Golf Whitlam (Prime Minister of Australia) provided a powerful awakening for many in Australia.

Inspiration for her current acrylic paintings include Hilma af Klimt, Jasper Jones and Mark Rothko. She has admired Margaret Olley for decades and more recently discovered Margaret Preston and Grace Cossington Smith

Roslyn has exhibited widely and often in Brisbane and Gladstone and was hung in the Rotary Art Spectacular in 2019.
