'You Did This (To Me') was created as one of my final paintings for the Graduate Show as part of my Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Queensland College of Art and Design. The work was also displayed in a further exhibition entitled 'We Belong to Our Time'.
The painting was born out of a 7 month project that involved a collaboration between myself and 19 other participants and generative AI, to explore the ethical limitations and creative possibilities of that technology.
I love abstract painted works and the background of 'You Did This (To Me)' is abstract acrylic. Having painted the background, I then created an SVG image from a digital generative AI artwork that I had generated as part of the project. I transformed the SVG image into a large scale stencil, which I then painted through, with acrylic paint, using rollers. The use of rollers was deliberate to reflect the machine origins of generative AI.
This is an extremely striking work and is reminiscent of the Pop Art movement of the mid to late-1950s but utilises the contemporary and disruptive technology of generative AI.
The figure reminds me of a cowboy in an old fashioned Western, in the moment where he has been shot and birds fly up in the air around him. I love the work for its' narrative quality and ambiguity.
I hand framed the work in a Meranti timber floating frame. It has D-rings and wire and is ready to be hung. This will be a signature work for any room in which it is situated.
The painting is signed on the front and rear and I will provide a Certificate of Authenticity.
