Artwork Description

In this series of work I float between abstraction and representation, where a sense of place is depicted in a dreamlike existence. I explore the tangible, yet often symbolic impressions that the ceaselessly shifting nature of our environment leaves upon us. The human connection to land is both immediate and nostalgic, as it continues to live inside as a powerful intermingling of memory and feeling. The interplay of intensity and softness, serenity and chaos in each piece evokes a sublime yet also transient effect, reflecting the often-elusive nature of ‘belonging’ to any place and time.

Artist Bio

Ryan is a visual artist from the southern part of the Gold Coast, best known for his dreamlike landscape paintings. Ryan is mainly self-taught, but in 2017 he was fortunate to meet and have private mentoring by UK abstract artist Peter Ceredig-Evans who was key in developing his unique style. Alongside developing his art practice, Ryan has undergone extensive education in natural medicine and human psychology. This reflects his ardent curiosity in the relationship between humanity and nature.

“My work floats between abstraction and representation, where a sense of place is depicted in a dreamlike existence. I explore the tangible, yet often symbolic impressions that the ceaselessly shifting nature of our environment leaves upon us. The human connection to land, sea and sky is both immediate and nostalgic, as it continues to live inside as a powerful intermingling of memory and feeling. My practice involves dynamic mark making where I continually aim to strike a balance between chaotic intuition and orderly form. At times when I work, I am totally absorbed in my emotions, and at other times I apply very considered strokes to bring about resolution. This interplay of intensity and softness, serenity and chaos creates a distinct sense of movement and transience, reflecting the often-elusive nature of ‘belonging’ to any place and time.”
