Sabina HR Choi grew up in S. Korea and lives in Wollongong, NSW. As a self-taught artist with History & Museum studies background, she started learning art by joining a local community art class of the portrait & life drawing in Melbourne, 2001. As following her husband’s job relocations in Singapore & UAE and frequent travelling in Europe & Asia, she had broadened her perspective of diverse cultures & arts and explored different media.
Since returning to Australia in 2017 for good, she has been taking art seriously for her life. Her strength is in figurative art which is shown into life drawing and a long series of her daughter’s portrait. In her childhood, calligraphy writing with pen & ink leads to use a calligraphy brush with black ink on paper. In the life drawing, she makes bold but effortless lines, succinct shapes filled with few vivid colours. As a favourite medium, acrylic gives her freedom of painting to express reflection of daily observation and feeling. Recently, she has expanded subject matters such as café interior, classical music and inner landscape. Inspired by Zen Buddhism art, she creates concise & meditative drawing. Also, great homage to Henri Matisse, Milton Avery and Edward Munch, she applies their philosophy on her paintings. Her art is evolving by constant art making as a reflective way of ordinary life and emotion.
