A simple dark and light brownish photo which feels modern and surreal. The human body and a mirror in which the body’s reflection takes an unusual form. Although at first glance this photo looks coloured, it can easily be categorised as monochrome. The photo owes its simplicity to this monochromatic quality. The light and darker shades of the background create a modern and surreal space. The positioning of the mirror in relation to the individual has created a new physical entity out of the human body: the hands have taken the place of the head, and a third hand adds a new dimension to the image. Even though the head is missing in the image, its place does not come across as empty. It almost feels as if this new body doesn’t need a head. The photo invites its audience to analyse it intuitively. It begins by challenging them to solve the riddle of how the photo is physically possible. The answer then leads them to new questions such as: Are mirrors always reflective of what is real? Or is it possible that they put distance between us and reality? Do the new perspectives they offer, change the meaning of what we see?
