Awakening

My inspiration for 'Awakening' was to show my experience with the shift from past traumatic memories to moving forward to the present. Its representation is the flow from dark to light reaching upward. I chose blue as a feeling of looking up into the sky creating an openness. Also, blue creates a feeling of calm. As I have said, each piece I paint has significance to me and emerges intuitively.
My artist statement is as follows for this piece.

A journey through emotional memory. An exploration of our past and our inner world, navigating the fluctuations of the emotional self with awareness and gaining a new perspective. Once we have brought our attention to the parallel between childhood experiences and present experiences, we can let them go.

Sallie paints in the style of abstract expressionism to put her thoughts, raw emotion, fears and dreams onto the canvas.
Sallie draws inspiration from her personal experience living with mental illness and her empathetic sensitivities to create her works. Each piece is unique and tells its own story.

“The ability to create is empowering. Painting connects me to the feelings that are too complex for words to suffice. A part of me, my thoughts, my identity, is imprinted on the canvas.”

Sallie resides in Blackburn on Wurundjeri land with her husband, two teenage sons, and her menagerie of fur and feathered babies.
