Many years ago I walked the stone towns of Tuscan Italy. It was summer and flowers were in bloom, everywhere. I can’t remember exactly how I came across this flower. Had it been strewn across the ground or had I plucked it from a bush? Stone walls speak of strength and resilience. So did this flower in its own delicate way. It had no roots and its lifetime was limited so it had a finite time to be what it was meant to be. To shine with beauty, to bring joy and to inspire. I placed the flower in a crack on part of a wall as I walked. It was late afternoon and the lighting was perfect.
When I look at this photo I see delicate strength. It’s about finding the strength to be true to ourselves, finally, because for many of us, that in itself is a struggle. Whether it’s the daily vagaries of life or the proverbial responsibilities that shelve our dreams or the challenges that take their toll on us. We’re left with nothing but a survival instinct. Yet after a while, we find that being true to ourselves is the only means to survive. The alternative feels like drowning in a sea of possibly irrelevant societal norms. I hope this piece brings you joy and inspiration.
