Hi there. My name is Sally Whisson Mattner and I’m an Australian artist living in Geelong, Victoria.
Painting is my passion. I’ve been involved in art making, in one medium or another, most of my life. Teaching art to children, secondary school students and adults gave me a greater depth to painting techniques, mediums and methods . Working in the art industry as an Education Officer for Art Galleries was a delight and a highlight. Involvement in 3 solo exhibitions, 3 combined exhibitions and various community art shows has been rewarding.
I am currently working in oils but I have also painted in watercolours and acrylics. I like to capture: a moment in time; more than a place; a personality or character; the fall of light on ‘the everyday’. I like to reinterpret reality with colour, form, contrast, texture and artistic expression and take the viewer into the scene so they can experience that moment; explore that place; resonate with that character; feel charmed by ‘the everyday’. I paint what takes my eye. From everyday objects to magical places and interesting people. Expressing something more than reality is my aim. I strive to reinterpret reality with more than the eye can see: with mood, character and personal expression.
My style is ever-evolving as I explore art techniques, challenge myself and take risks. Each piece totally absorbs me, posing problems to be solved, generating ideas in the exploration of media and methods and my full immersion in the artwork. I hope you’ll enjoy my paintings as much as I have.
