Running ahead-
She watched in anticipation as her Father studied the ‘Closed for maintenance’ sign at the entrance to the maze.
“They’re probably just in there trimming some of the hedges back” he said. “Go on then”
He’d hardly finished his sentence before they took off running and giggling.
It wasn’t long before she realised her sister was no longer running next to her.
A wave of optimism came over her, thinking of the moment she reached the end before them, and the proud look she imagined her Father would give her as they walked out.
Wishing she had taken her hat from the car to battle the hot sun, she called back to the distant voice of her sister.
Then eventually, hers was the only voice she could hear.
Giggling nervously, she darted around corners, becoming slower and slower.
She had never noticed how tall the hedges of the maze were before.
The sun had retreated behind the green leaves and the world seemed darker and less inviting.
How long had she been in the maze for?
A sense of fear crept in, as if it had been waiting in the shadows to show itself, how would she get out?….
