This work is part of a larger series titled Great Heart (2021) inspired by Savuka, a well-known South African band from the 1980s to 90s. Despite growing up in Australia, my upbringing was shaped by Zulu music, culture and language because my Ouma (grandma) was a Zulu teacher. The initial first planning stage of the photoshoot was to capture my dear high school friend, Sihle after 7 years since our last photoshoot together in an illuminating light and location that would benefit both our portfolios. Eventually this led to my fascination with red light and post sunset/blue hour combination with an experimental double exposure done in camera that I discovered worked well on set. The technique creates a composite image with a surreal and dreamlike effect, even under direct red lighting. This work has garnered the attention of multiple exhibitions and prizes such Brisbane Portrait Prize and Wyndham Art Prize, as well as exhibited at Metro Arts for Emerging Artists.

Artist Bio
Hi there, I'm Samantha Marié (Kiley) and I'm 25 and currently finishing up my curating degree! (update)
Born and raised in Brisbane, I currently reside in Melbourne, where I pursue my love for contemporary art.
My background is in abstract paintings and creating work for people's homes. Although growing into a young adult, photography stuck with me the most as a practice.
I moved up into the world of contemporary photography, drawing inspiration from Gregory Crewdson and Taryn Simon, who explore ambiguous and unsettling subject matters.
