This work is a part of my “Great Heart” series, which is titled after the band, Savuka’s song Great Heart. The red symbolises the enduring spirit of humanity and the song was written during the oppressive apartheid regime in South Africa. Despite growing up in Australia, my upbringing was shaped by anti-apartheid music with Zulu language and culture. The ghostly double figure captured in camera is inspired by the ancestral spirit. When death occurs in Zulu religion, the shadow separates from the body and becomes an ancestral spirit.

Artist Bio
Hi there, I'm Samantha Marié (Kiley) and I'm 25 and currently finishing up my curating degree! (update)
Born and raised in Brisbane, I currently reside in Melbourne, where I pursue my love for contemporary art.
My background is in abstract paintings and creating work for people's homes. Although growing into a young adult, photography stuck with me the most as a practice.
I moved up into the world of contemporary photography, drawing inspiration from Gregory Crewdson and Taryn Simon, who explore ambiguous and unsettling subject matters.
