Samantha Thompson (b. 1978) is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist based in regional Victoria, Australia. Thompson completed a Graduate Certificate in Visual Art at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2021, and is currently working towards her Masters of Contemporary Art at VCA. Her works can be found in private and public collections across the world.
Drawing from a robust background in textiles and printmaking, Thompson fuses traditional techniques with expressionistic line drawing to explore how matriarchal lineages are conveyed through domestic crafts. Her multidimensional works often reflect the interplay between physical contexts and personal histories, playfully interpreting biological adaptions as symbols of repressed emotional experiences. Revealing the inextricable link between grief and wonder, Thompson’s work invites viewers into an abundant alternative world where fictional binaries are finally reconciled in the same strange creations.
Alongside her art practice, Thompson is committed to encouraging regional community involvement with the arts, regularly designing and delivering projects that aim to address social issues through creative engagement.
