Hello & welcome, my name is Sammy, I come from the Djukun, Yawuru, Bardi Jawi tribes from Broome, now living on Balladong Country.
My Name is Sammy Wyborn.
My jalgna (totem) is the Nimunburr which in Djugun language means “Flying Fox”
I used to awkwardly hand upside down, attempting to do everything upside down, even showering…..very strange I know!! But the name that was given to me has great meaning as the Flying fox teaches about the values of community. Not only the larger community that we live in, but also the smaller communities that make up our family and extended families, our different groups of friends (and how to negotiate all of them if they don’t all get along!) and any other community groups that revolve around volunteer work, carer, spiritual groups ect…..this is who I am and I am extremely proud!
I have hosted Art exhibitions, sold at markets, invited to be apart of numerous exhibitions, invited to collaborate and invited to work with schools.
I was taught by mother and now my children learn and sell their artworks.​
I am very passionate about my culture and empowering my people, especially our youth, no matter what tribe they come from.
Fun Facts About me;
​2024: First Aboriginal woman to host an Aboriginal Art Exhibition in Northam.
2022: I am the first Aboriginal Woman to hand craft the Mr and Miss Naidoc Crowns 2022.
2022: I designed a limited edition for Gilbert's Rugby balls and 50 balls.
2021: I spent 60 hours hand painting a Gown that is on display at the Boola Bardip Museum.
2020: I designed the Broome Sea Rescue Shirts.
2019: Naidoc Awards designed for Goolarri Media.
2016: won the Shinju Photography Award as part of the annual Shinju Festival.
