Fate

The concept of fate came from Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung, who mentioned that ‘the work in process becomes the poet’s fate and determines his psychic development. It is not Goethe who creates Faust, but Faust which creates Goethe’. For me, painting is like fate that leads me to find myself, appreciate nature, and explore the cosmos.

This work starts with a red thread that binds the scroll painting. A red thread is a representation of fate in Chinese mythology with a magical cord that may stretch or tangle but never break. In this ancient story, an old lunar matchmaker god takes charge of marriage. He uses an invisible red cord to tie the soulmates together. This red thread represents love strung from the painterly world to the landscape of the seaside. Behind the moon gate, there is a fairy hearing the voice of fate, which represents that the best thing about fate is to be heard by someone who knows me.

Art is my way of sensing my own existence and perceiving the world, offering a space for sensitivity and vulnerability. During the process of making, narratives of life naturally emerge, giving voice to emotions, memories, and experiences that are difficult to express in words. Encounters between my inner world and the world around me create visions that feel both meditative and alive. When I paint, I feel as if the whole world is my sketchbook.

I am a painter with over a decade of experience and hold a Master of Fine Arts from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Since 2023, I have exhibited in both group and solo exhibitions, including at L27 Art Gallery, Queen Victoria Women’s Centre, No Vacancy Gallery, Brunswick Street Gallery, GALLERYGALLERY INC, and the Museum of Chinese Australian History. My graduate work has been recognised with the Yarra Branch Award from the Australian Decorative & Fine Arts Society.
