Artwork Description

Figs on Linen is painted from a photograph which I took in my kitchen in a spot which always gets the best morning light.
There is a background of plain, neutral linen and five figs, one cut in half with all the juiciness on show. The colours range from bright neon green, shades of ochre, vibrant oranges and deep purple.
The painting would look great perched on a kitchen shelf or hung on the wall, on it's own or in a gallery wall display.

Artist Bio

My artistic training began in the UK, at Oxford Brookes University. I then completed my Three Dimensional Degree at Loughborough College of Art and Design, specialising in Silversmithing and Jewellery Design. During my studies I won a precious metal bursary from Goldsmiths College to complete a piece which then went on to be exhibited at the Passing Out Exhibition in Edinburgh.

After graduating I won a commission from The British Museum's Art Medal Society to design a medal which would be sold to it's patrons and included in it's publications. I was also invited to give a talk on my work at their 1997 Annual Conference, held in Paris. In 1998 I was approached by The Victoria and Albert Museum, London to acquire one of my medal designs for display in the Gilbert Bayes Room in the Museum.

Having worked as a Graphic Designer after graduation, we packed up our young family and emigrated to Australia in 2007 and it was here that my love for Australian flora began. I found the light, forms and colours fascinating. With a very structured illustrative style, I produced digital drawings of (mostly) floral subjects. I enjoyed paring things down to minimal shapes, blocks of tone and colour and exploring how shadows play across the forms.

Fast forward a few years and I have decided to pick up my paintbrush again and transfer this type of drawing to the canvas. Having worked digitally for many years I am enjoying the immediacy of the paint medium (no control Z!) and also producing larger scale artworks.
