Artwork Description

This artwork was a finalist in the 2020 Fisher’s Ghost Art Prize, traditional section.

This artwork forms a part of a body of work that I created exploring the evolution of identity and how much of personal identity is fixed and how much is transient and still being formed. Feel free to read my musings and philosophy below.

No individual can claim total independence from another human. Isolation is myth, no matter how much we might desire it, attain it, or have it forced upon us. We are connected and interconnected in the broadest of terms and the most intimate and primal.
Society, culture, community, friendship, organisation, experience, humanity. Family.

No one in the human race is formed without the integral presence and influence of another being. We are eternally the receivers and the givers of identity. In light of this, we each play a liable role in the formation of the people in our lives, just as we are formed in turn by those same people. Whether nurtured, neglected, abandoned, surrounded, enriched, depleted, abused, valued, entitled, challenged, loved or forgotten, we all form identity through connection to others.

Even the absence of another has indelible power to create.

This body of work explores these various facets of identity and it’s organic and fluid reality. I am analysing my own identity, and how I have instrumentally shaped my daughters; biologically, socially, spiritually and their view of the world. Yet there is recognition of my own shifting and shaping because of my daughters and the challenges and life they have created in me. Traditional thought might assume that the influencers of identity are those that have authority, a public voice, status. However, in an era of increasing media cacophony and the warping of human connection, perhaps it is the quieter things that have true power to form. A family holiday, meals at a table, the long road of parenting.

Finding the balance between the fully formed and the “yet to be” aspect of identity is reflected in the various treatments of the image. The wiping away of paint, the deliberate absence of areas of the body, the placement of the subject within an abstracted void, where the emergence of the face and figure with sharpening clarity depicts the gradual emergence of the individual.

Artwork comes framed and ready to hang with D-ring attachments and polyester cord.

Artist Bio

Welcome to my Bluethumb page!

It's great to see you here! I am currently out of Australia, so I have marked my art as unavailable until I return in mid July. When I return I will be reinstating my available art as well as hopefully lots of new creations made on my sabbatical.

In the mean time, feel free to read more about my practice, drop me a line or check out my website and social media platforms.

I am a constantly evolving artist with a desire to bring excellence, authenticity and taste to everything I create. I float between botanical studies, to portraiture, to collage, to surrealism, to human figures, to narrative and figurative landscapes. I paint, I draw, I collage, I think, I dream, I ponder, I create.

And I try not to limit myself to one style, subject or theme, because, you know, there's just so much to explore and only one life in which to do it!

Feel free to read my official bio below and have a look at my CV, but truly, I hope my art just speaks for itself.
I have other examples of my work on my website www.sarahfrostart.com.au

Sarah is an award-winning artist based in North West of Sydney. Her versatility of technique, deep exploration of themes and theory, and confidence with various mediums is evident in the authenticity and clarity of her work. Sarah has been a finalist in numerous prestigious awards and was the recipient of the James Gleeson Surrealism Award, a category of the 2018 Fisher's Ghost Art Award.

Sarah's paintings, drawings and collage combine a focus on portraiture and figurative imagery with an exploration of the connection between the tangible and the intangible. She aims to capture and translate the mood, atmosphere and imagery of dreams and subconscious nostalgia and the connection to identity.

A study of botanical subjects and still life object with the flavours of yester-year are a recent area of study, with a focus on traditional techniques and homage to her Dutch ancestry.

All of these areas of exploration and varied techniques make Sarah a multidisciplinary artist with wide areas of interest.
