Artist Bio

Sarah Richardson is a New Zealand-born, Sydney-based artist whose practice explores the psychology of human consciousness and the connectivity to nature and nurture – an exploration into self and soul.

Sarah has had a love of colour and passion for art from a young age which was nurtured through her complete Rudolf Steiner Education in New Zealand and Australia. Her first recognition was being selected for NSW ArtExpress, an annual series of exhibitions of exemplary artworks created by New South Wales visual arts students for the Higher School Certificate, where she also excelled. That same passion for colour has created a deep desire to explore the evocativeness and connection between emotions and palette in her paintings.

“I have practiced extensively everything from Charcoal nudes to heavily impasto Acrylics – but have always gravitated towards the luscious nature of oils – for me, oils are romantic, luxurious, rich, and viscous. The application experience is as important as the final composition. In the final layers of completion, my works now naturally gravitate towards abstracted landscapes. Lush foliage with layers and layers of textures and green hues, for me, is joyous.”

“There is always a mindful connection with my medium in both colour and viscosity. My temperament is evident in the palette I work with - this could be layers on an existing work or starting a new piece completely. A myriad of greens is when my heart is lifted most”

In 2005 Sarah completed her Hon. Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) from the University of Technology, Sydney.

“I completed my degree with the intension of always fulfilling my life career aspirations as an Interior Designer, as I understood being an Artist was only but a lofty dream at the time and it would never sustain me financially.”

“In 2019 I was diagnosed with high-grade Breast Cancer and my world was turned upside down. Whilst I worked throughout my entire Cancer treatment, I realised life can be taken away in an instant and I no longer wanted to hide behind the work of great artists. I realised the best therapy for healing my mind and body was creating. Dark thoughts melted away and inspiration grew. Art gave me light, hope, and excitement for my future. Now, years on, I am gratefully in remission and want to share my emotional journey through human consciousness and the connectivity to colour, light, and nature.”

“I hope these works resonate with the viewer to create their own emotive responses.”
