The inspiration for the Wall is the water wall at the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) St Kilda Road in Melbourne. I make a regular pilgrimage there from Hobart (usually when the Winter Masterpieces exhibition is on) and it holds special memories for me, as I attended the people's opening of the building as a child in 1968. My most recent visit this winter inspired me to attack a pre-loved canvas of mine with palette knife, oil paint and impasto medium. I also ran a copper oil stick over the dry texture, and felt that my actions brought out the feeling of running my hands through the water and seeing distorted reflections of people and sculptures. In different lights the work will glow and you will see a variety of entities within.
