Saran Kim is a creative practitioner interested in observing, documenting, and representing sensory experiences in landscapes. Having studied architecture and landscape architecture, Saran believes in the power of drawing and craft in capturing the beauty of nature and materiality.
Saran sees her diverse creative practice as something ignited by a purpose. For the last 10 years, she has created over 100 handcrafted cards to express gratitude or celebrate special occasions of close friends, teachers, families and colleagues. Each card is always tailored to a specific addressee as the design and crafting process is oriented by thinking about what they value and appreciate. Using collected materials, including exhibition brochures, washi paper and newspaper, each card plays with light and shadow, the three-dimensionality of two-dimensional mediums, and the whole experience of opening the card.
Furthermore, her drawing practice focuses on two ends of the spectrum: observational drawings dissecting tectonics of plants and built environments, and abstract representations of moving elements - especially water and air - that invite viewers to form their own interpretations. Her training in architecture informed the role of line drawings as revealing new ideas and realisations. Her recent works reflect her passion for the local landscapes of Melbourne.
