Feeling empathy for the citizens of Ukraine at this horrific time of invasion of their country, I began thinking of how they could or would find hope and some kind of mental sanctuary. It would be perhaps a a beautiful memory of a their past ; that would bring a smile to their lips ir joy to their hearts. Personally, my cultural her takes me back to a hist of ‘ragas ( melody or familiar painting that would revert the chaos around me. So I have used the reds and oranges to signify bloody chaos and fire but the heart of the painting cooler tones to contrast the outer turmoil to the inner peace and protection; sanctuary

The textured grey canvas holds memories of the death of my mother in June last year. One year later this June, I placed the colours of joy, and release; of happiness that her soul no lon suff the constraints of her failing body. She loved water lilies that grew in my garden. It is an offering to her. My visit to Ankur Wat in Cambodia, led me to dance atop the magnificent structure. That memory of being surrounded by the sculptures of heavenly nymphs (apsaras) affected me deeply. The memory of that experience was the inspiration for this painting, the background of which was created while dancing. The painting expresses the feeling of deep inner Peace that is experienced in meditation.
