An original oil painting inspired by the Australian brown snake and created to mark the Lunar Year of the Snake. Blending observation with interpretation, the work explores the snake as both living form and symbol of renewal and quiet power.

Artist Bio

Saskia Mariet Gilmour is a Meanjin/Brisbane-based artist and curator whose practice traverses the diverse terrains of landscape, culture, memory and identity, creating works that provide poetic and provoking responses to positions across place and time. Trained in traditional painting and drawing, Saskia's practice frequently references cross-cultural art traditions, where the art historical is reinterpreted with renewed contemporary relevance and understanding.

Saskia graduated from undergraduate studies in Fine Art at the Queensland College of Art in 2015 where she majored in Interdisciplinary Sculpture. Her work has been included in a number of group exhibitions, including Drawing {a,b} curated by William Platz and Kellie O'Dempsey for The Hold Artspace (2015). In 2016 she was invited to participate in 23 Degrees, a landscape show held at the Woolloongabba Art Gallery, which included a number of works by significant Australian contemporary artists including Ian Smith, Henri van Noordenburg, Ron McBurnie and Peter Hudson. In 2026 she held her first solo exhibition NOW & Other Tragedies at the Brisbane Institute of Art.
