Ma

In Japanese, "Ma" is a concept that refers to the space between things—not just physical space, but also temporal and emotional intervals. It's often translated as "gap," "pause," or "interval," but its deeper meaning is more nuanced.

Ma emphasises the importance of negative space or the absence that defines presence. It appears across Japanese arts, design, architecture, music, and even social interactions. Rather than being "empty," Ma is seen as full of potential—a space that gives rhythm, balance, and clarity.

Shannon's work uses texture and colour to create pieces that have mystery and movement. She takes her inspiration from nature and paints intuitively. She allows herself to be immersed in the process of creating lines and shapes that work together to create a seamless piece that flows naturally and allows the eye to gaze upon the multiple layers of pattern.

The aim of Shannon's art is to create wonder and provoke the senses, what you see in each creation is entirely what the mind creates, from the magic of the pattern and depth.

With the deep connection to nature she also enjoys capturing the Australian landscape and has a fascination with space, occasionally releasing a small amount of photographic prints.
