Artwork Description

Light Finds Its Way
184 × 172 cm

Light Finds Its Way moves through layers of mark, line and colour — built through accumulation, interruption and release.

Drawn from time spent walking along the shoreline at Safety Beach and through the dense growth of Olinda Botanic Gardens, the work reflects the tangle of branches, roots and shifting light found in those spaces.

Lines cross, build and break apart. Areas open, then close again.

There’s a push and pull between structure and freedom — moments of density held against passages of air and light.

The work isn’t about a fixed place, but the feeling of moving through one.
A way through, always.

A large-scale, designer-oriented piece suited to open living spaces, feature walls or architectural interiors where the work can breathe and hold the room.

Acrylic, spray paint and pastel on canvas.

This artwork will be shipped rolled in a protective tube for safe shipping, unless stretching or framing is selected at checkout.

Artist Bio

Shannon Riches is an abstract expressionist artist based on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. With a 30-year background in graphic design and illustration, his work now centres on intuitive mark-making and tonal exploration inspired by the coastline and the Dandenong Ranges.
His process is tactile and instinctive — often painting with his hands, bark and found natural materials alongside traditional brushes to build layered, organic surfaces. Shannon also produces music under the name Approaching Black, and sees both practices as expressions of the same language — composition, tone and atmosphere.
His paintings are created to feel lived-in and emotionally grounded — artworks that belong in real spaces, quietly shaping the story of the room.
