Artwork Description

This painting is inspired by Australian Gum trees. I love all the beautiful varieties of Eucalypt. The colours change with the seasons, the weather and the light. They can be smooth, rough, etched, papered, blackened, mighty, and spindly. I can never get enough of these magnificent trees and will probably have to paint more and more, now that I have begun.

Artist Bio

At a young age I was drawn to visual expression, finding solace and excitement in mark-making and experimenting with materials that echoed the natural beauty surrounding me.
In the early 1990s, I studied Fine Arts at the National Art School in Sydney. Here, I honed my craft, deepening my understanding of many visual art forms. Over the years I have developed a visual language that weaves together bold gesture, layered forms, and a dynamic interplay of colour.
My painting practice is best described as fluid and gestural, marked by vibrant, luminous tones, drawing and sweeping movements. Each canvas becomes a living surface—an energetic field where spontaneity meets intention, and layers build maps of both inner and outer worlds. My compositions often evoke a sense of landscape, yet they exist equally as explorations of emotional terrain and personal mythology.
Drawing inspiration from my time spent immersed in nature, throughout Australia and overseas, I approach each work as a journey through memory, sensation, and place. Through the use of washes, glazes, drawing, etching, printing, pours, and expressive brushwork, my paintings embody a sense of movement and transformation. The resulting imagery is both map-like and abstract—inviting viewers to navigate the layered spaces between the seen and the felt, the real and the imagined.
As an artist, I am continually exploring ways to translate the energy of lived experience into visual form, seeking to create dynamic, immersive compositions that resonate with viewers on multiple levels. My work stands as a testament to the enduring influence of landscape—both external and internal—and to the ever-evolving dance between control and chaos, intuition and structure, that lies at the heart of abstract expression.
